And the award goes to…BELLE Magazine!
Bennett College is home to the Best HBCU Student Publication. The Belle Magazine recently won the HBCU Award. Belle Magazine is a student run magazine that is produced by the Journalism & Media Studies (JMS) Department. The department says this is the first award received for the department in at least 10 years.
“I had a lot of emotions when I was informed that Belle won the award for best student publication. I was excited, proud, and shocked,” says Evette Brown, junior managing editor of Belle Magazine online.
The HBCU Awards acknowledges and celebrates achievement from historically black colleges and universities throughout the United States. The nominees for best student publication had to demonstrate reputable coverage of institutional culture, impact the campus community, and have a measurable presence both in print and online. Bennett was up against several institutions with more established publications, but pulled out the victory.
“We are a fairly new publication and the fact that we beat out publications that have been around for a while made me realize that hard work pays off,” says Brown.
Belle Magazine started four semesters ago when the JMS Department was located in the mobile classrooms called Shell Hall.
“When we first started working on Belle we only had about three working computers and we knew absolutely nothing about producing a magazine,” says Myeisha Essex, senior, co-founder and creative director of Belle Media Group.
Essex says Shell Hall lacked a lot of the necessary equipment to produce a magazine, but the magazine staff made it work.
“I was overly excited when I found out that we were nominated for the HBCU Award,” says Essex.
Tamara Jeffries, assistant professor in the JMS Department is the advisor over the magazine. Students from all disciplines are welcomed to participate in contributing to the magazine.
