Belles Ignoring Opportunities
“Students have to take action. Once I send out the email with the opportunity for the internship it is the job of the students to apply.”
McGriff says the careers service center is not the only source on campus for internship opportunities. She suggests students also look for opportunities within their major departments, clubs and organizations, and the president’s office for career help.
McGriff says Bennett College has relationships with companies all over the country and in various fields.
One relationship that Bennett College has is with U.S. Senator Kay Hagan. Since 2008, Senator Hagan has given three Bennett Belles the opportunity to intern within her office for a semester.
McGriff says one student applied this year, and was accepted. She says Jacquieta Beverly, a junior political science major is reaping the benefits of the hard work of the previous two interns.
“When others do well it makes it easier for others to be placed and given the opportunity.”
Jacquieta Beverly is from Oakland California, and she thanks Bennett College for the privilege of interning with Senator Hagan.
“The program is amazing. I am always busy never just sitting around. I love it.”
Beverly says she’s interning 20 hours a week and taking 18 credit hours. She encourages other Belles to apply for the internship in the future.
McGriff says the process of applying for internships depends on the company. In many cases you have an application process that includes a package with a resume, cover letter and in some cases a personal statement with a topic of the companies choice.
McGriff says the interview process is the most important part. Students must make sure they properly research the company to do well. As I was writing this article career services sent out an email about Peace Corps Recruitment.
McGriff says if you check your email you won’t miss out on these opportunities.
