Belle’s Spring Trip Breaks
One Belle’s spring break adventure sounds like something right out of a movie.
“My plane was cancelled. They cancelled my hotel.”
Ashley Sherrill, a junior forensic psychology major had plans to spend her break in New Orleans, Louisiana. She and her cousin were going to take in the celebrations leading up to Mardi Gras. Sherrill describes how their plans began to unravel.
“My plane was cancelled. So, I called to let the hotel know that my cousin would need to check-in. They told me that she had to be 21 or older to check-in.”
Sherrill says this confused her because she’s not 21, and she booked the room.
“After I told them I was 20, they cancelled my hotel. So, now I have no hotel. My flight was rescheduled to leave that next day, and my cousin was flying to Louisiana with nowhere to go.”
Sherrill says only her cousin’s bags made it to Louisiana. Like most movies, the spring break trip didn’t end there.
“I called up a friend, and we all three drove to Florida.”
Sherrill says they went from flying to Mardi Gras to driving around 10 hours to Orlando, Florida.
“We took pictures and stopped in random places. It was pretty fun with all 3 of us driving. One would take a nap in the back. The other girl would sit up front with whoever was driving, so none of us were ever up alone.”
Sherrill says she learned from her earlier hotel-booking mistake.
“I was calling all day to hotels in their area to make sure I could be under 21 to check in. We ended up going to the Wingate Hotel. [We ordered] two day passes to University Park and Adventure Island. I wanted to go to Disney World, but in the end we still had fun.”
Adventure Island is an amusement park dedicated to comic book characters, and other notable entertainment characters. The park included theme rides from the Hulk, Spiderman, Popeye, Harry Potter, and Dr. Seuss to name a few.
They then ventured over to Nickelodeon’s park. Each building is dedicated to the set of popular movies or Nickelodeon shows like: The Mummy, Hey Arnold!, Jimmy Neutron, and Shrek.
“We spent two days down there. The third day we left to go to Myrtle Beach. We found this cheap hotel on the shoreline.”
Myrtle Beach is located in South Carolina, and Sherrill says it’s a party zone during most college’s spring breaks.
“Bennett’s break is before most colleges, so we were the only people around. We checked out some beach shops, but soon went to bed. We woke up to the sound of the ocean. It was so gorgeous. It was too cold to go swimming. We just walked on the beach and collected seashells.”
Sherrill says they headed home and spent the rest of the break with family and friends. Here are her final thoughts and advice to other Belles about taking trips.
“We had so much fun. I was glad we went. I think we spent at least $300 a piece, but it was worth it. I would have to say that if anyone were trying to take a vacation like we did that they would need money. So, save up. Bring a camera, extra clothes for anything that could come. Remember to still leave room for the things you’ll buy. It’s fun being a tourist, and talking to new people. Don’t be afraid to have fun.”
