Bennett Helps Belles During Midterms
Many students are not aware of the tutoring services provided at Bennett says Ratasha Peterkin, director of tutoring services in the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT) department.
CTLT’s mission statement states, “The major goal of the unit is to provide academic support programs and strengths-based initiatives that foster student academic success and retention.”
“We provide students with tutors for subjects such as Spanish, math, English, history, French, accounting, chemistry and biology,” says Peterkin.
Students can get take advantage of the different services by filling out a request form. Students must list the subject they need help in, and the specific problems they have with that subject.
Academic Provost Esther Terry recently sent an email to the Bennett community informing them of the extended library hours that will be provided as we approach midterm week. The extended hours became effective Wednesday, February 16 and will run until Friday, February 25, 2011. President Malveaux and members of the senior staff agreed to these changes with the hope that they will prove to be useful for students during their midterm preparation.
Senior business major Norquesha Martin says the library is practically her home during midterms because of the long hours she spends their studying. “With the extended hours I won’t have to rush, and can take my time studying for my tests.”
Dr. Marlene F. Blumin, associate professor of education and director of the All-University Study Skills Program gives students some of her most beneficial study strategies.
First, begin studying for midterms no fewer than ten days before the test. Second, when studying review by topic and not by source. Third, create an organized visual of the material to relate the information. Fourth, create or join a study group to anticipate test questions. Last but not least when short on time, students should spend the most effort studying topics that were highlighted throughout the course.
Junior journalism and media studies major Sierra Cotton says she has a different and unique method to studying for her midterms.
“A clean room and some candles help me relax. I make sure that my room door is locked and with the mood set I have a successful study session for my midterms.”
The student government association has created their own method to help students during midterm week.
“We are doing study halls every Tuesday and Thursday in the union foyer to help better the grades of the school. We want to get students from all majors to help those students in their major who may be suffering. This will give us the opportunity to raise our GPA’s as a whole as well as bond as sisters,” says Cierra Brockington, executive secretary of the SGA.
Bennett College hopes the added resources will help students have a successful midterm week.
