Bigger Breast Bustier Problems
Most women own a pair of boobs, but not everybody can handle the extra weight. Studies have shown that women with larger breasts commonly experience back, neck and shoulder pain in addition to other health problems.
Sophomore Biology major Ferline Milandu says her 38DD breasts are too heavy, and they cause her back pain. “My back hurts a lot and my posture isn’t good because they are too big.”
Milandu says she wears bad bras, so that could also factor into why she continues to have back issues. “I feel like my body isn’t meant for these, they’re too big!”
Nurse Shana Crudup says that wearing the right size bra would help to alleviate some pain associated with having heavy breasts. “[Women] really need to wear what is appropriate for [them.] It’s the same thing with shoes, you don’t want your toes to be hurting and you know you wear a size 10. If that’s what your toes require instead of crunching them up, you should find a pair your size.”
Crudup says that women are worried about their image and that’s why they are not wearing the correct size bra. “I know that people are self-conscious about the size bra that they wear. Truthfully it’s just a tag nobody will see and people can care less. It would feel and look better for [bustier] women to wear the correct size bra. It lifts and supports.”
Anybody who wears the wrong size bra might be uncomfortable, but that’s just part of the problem for women with larger breasts. “Wearing the wrong size bra can cause back problems and that could lead to not shifting your weight like you should, and eventually cause hip and knee problems,” says Crudup.
In addition, Crudup says that your posture could be affected.
According to livestrong.com pain is not the only side effect of having larger breasts. Nerve problems, skin problems, and restricted activity are also common effects. Poor posture can lead to chronic nerve problems.
Amber Rainey, sophomore social work major says that her size 38DD breasts affect her back and posture regularly. “My chest feels heavy, my back hurts, and it’s just very uncomfortable.”
Skin conditions due to moist areas around the breasts can also occur. Individuals can experience rashes and yeast infections around the breasts because those areas are difficult to keep dry according to livestrong.com. Milandu says her breasts are so close together that she takes extra steps to keep that area dry. “I have to put baby powder there.”
“I probably take medicine every other day for the pain. I’m going to get a breast reduction,” says Rainey.
Nurse Shana says that if need be, a breast reduction could be possible if you’re feeling too uncomfortable. “There are no unusual health hazards in getting a breast reduction outside of normal surgical procedures.”
Crudup says there is simple fix to breast problems…better bras.“Women need to learn to take care of themselves first.”
