“Coach,” that’s what most on Bennett’s campus call Joyce Spruill. She coached Bennett’s basketball team for more than a decade. She’s no longer the coach, but she’s still a big part of Bennett College and it’s community.
Coach Spruill is a health instructor, assistant in the education department, and a community service organizer.
“My greatest joy is giving back to others because I am so blessed. I enjoy organizing and encouraging students to give back because they have been afforded great opportunities in and life and have the ability to help others.”
Coach Spruill regularly organizes community service projects for the campus with the Salvation Army and Urban Ministries. She is responsible for gathering teams of Bennett students to help feed the homeless and participate in food drives. Her biggest community service event is during the Christmas season. She coordinates a shuttle service that allows students to go to the Salvation Army to prepare baskets for those in need.
“I work with Coach Spruill every year for the Christmas community service project. Each year it seems like she is more and more passionate about giving back to others. Her passion and drive makes me continue to go,” says Mona Ayad-Worley senior English major at Bennett College.
Recently Spruill has come up with another project, which will help Bennett students get in shape. Every Tuesday students will be able to take part in “Fit City”. Students will be able to do exercises with a group lead by Coach Thomas Kirkman. Spruill says group classes will consist of aerobic exercises, body sculpting, and flexibility exercises.
“We came up wit this idea so that students could get in shape, and get toned before summer vacation. I often hear students complain about getting fit for the summer, but I rarely see them do anything. This program will help them get fit and get healthy.”
Coach Spruill says she still coaches basketball. She leads a team at her church, Wells Memorial Church of God in Christ.
