Delta Sigma Theta (DST) crowned a new king. The Delta Chapter at Bennett College held the “Man Behind the Mask” pageant where three contestants were crowned.
The six gentlemen in the pageant competed for Mr. 1913, Mr. Crimson and Cream and the top title of Mr. Omicron Delta (Mr. OD). Omicron Delta is the name of Bennett’s DST Chapter.
“I wasn’t expecting to win Mr. Omicron Delta.”
The unexpected winner who was crowned Mr. OD was Arkel Minick, a civil engineering major who attends North Carolina A&T State University.
Minick stated during the pageant that he was fit to be Mr. OD because giving back to his community and leaving a legacy behind means a lot to him.
“I lost my best friend in my arms, and in the last 20 minutes of his life we talked about what we have left behind in this world and what we are known for.”
He stressed the fact that the content of the last conversation he shared with his friend before losing him is his reasoning for giving back and why he ran for Mr. Omicron Delta.
“I want the community to know that I’m not just a man behind the mask anymore. I will be a face that the community comes to know and love because I’m an active member of it.”
Shawanda Jackson, the Vice President of the Omicron Delta Chapter of DST says that the pageant was a success.
Jackson says she has high hopes that Minnick will make all of his programs eventful and purposeful, and that he truly uses his networks with other organizations to make his programs successful.
“My expectations of our new Mr. Omicron Delta are that he truly implements community service and is a good representation of the chapter.”
Jackson concludes her statement by saying that she as well as the rest of the chapter has Minick’s back and they are truly looking forward to what he will bring to the table as their new Mr. Omicron Delta.
